Looking for something new and different for your next vacation? How about some weapons training in the West Bank with a hostage rescue thrown in?
Yes, you too, can find out what it’s like to be in the Israeli Army. And you even get to pay handsomely for the privilege. Weapons, ammo and — thank goodness — insurance are included.
The tour operators and instructors — some of whom are in the army reserves — offer an experience of a lifetime; one they say will teach you how to deal with all of life’s stresses. Plus an intimate look at the Israel few tourists ever see.
That’s all well and good. I’ve been to Israel several times and it’s an unforgettable place, especially if you’re Jewish. I’ve seen some of the women in the Israeli Army. Women my height dwarfed by their big guns.
I’m all for adventure travel but this is too hardcore for me. There are many other ways, IMO, to really become acquainted with Israel and its people without risking life and limb. As my Yiddishe grandma would say: You shouldn’t know from it.
I say if you’re on vacation, make matzo balls or hummus, not warfare. But hey, that’s just me.
